Since 2002, Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) has been a leading forum for global automakers and their large and small suppliers to work together to improve the environmental sustainability and business value of the global automotive supply chain, including efforts to advance water stewardship.

Looking forward, several of SP’s member companies are leading action to advance the next-generation of ambitious environmental sustainability goals aspiring to advance positive environmental, economic and community impacts. As the automotive industry continues its work toward these goals, SP is providing a unique forum to facilitate increased OEM and supplier dialogue and collaboration on common definitions, tools and resources to support our members in advancing action on water stewardship across the supply chain.

SP is working to educate automotive suppliers in developing and progressing their water stewardship programs, with support of subject-matter experts from SP member companies as well as government and non-profit collaborators.

Featured Resource: Water Stewardship Action Matrix

The Action Matrix is intended as a first step in helping automotive companies build water stewardship programs. As such it provides the necessary actions to ensure the right data, information and risk assessment processes are in place if and when companies choose to directly mitigate water-related risks and report those actions and outcomes to key external stakeholders.

Featured Resource: Water Stewardship Strategy Framework

The guidance document introduces a strategic framework and industry-driven water stewardship ambition that individual companies in the automotive value chain may align with and act on. The document also identifies key drivers for water stewardship action, highlights why companies in the automotive value chain should address water challenges and opportunities, and identifies potential specific water stewardship outcomes companies can address within their stage of the value chain.
