Selected Carbon Neutrality Resources
- Carbon Reduction KPIs, Terms & Definitions: Provides general industry-supported guidance to help companies in the automotive value chain in establishing a framework for carbon reporting and reduction aligned with common industry expectations. Version 2.0 Published December 2022.
- Carbon Maturity Framework: This document is intended as an informational tool to help companies in the automotive supply chain to self-assess their current programs against leading practices to identify potential opportunities for continuous improvement. Developed November 2023.
- Scope 3 Maturity Benchmark: In collaboration with the Scope 3 Peer Group and Proxima, the Benchmark is a free enterprise-level tool to help organizations to systemically build the capability to tackle Scope 3 emissions and speed up progress in meeting carbon targets. SP’s collaboration is intended to enable our membership to benefit from company and sector-specific insights that will come from participation in the project. Request Benchmark Invitation.
Selected Nature & Water Resources
- Nature-Related Terms & Definitions: The purpose of this document is to provide general industry-supported guidance to raise awareness of key nature-related terms and enhance consistency in communications on this topic across the automotive value chain. Published May 2024.
- Nature-based Solutions to Prevent Pollution and Support Biodiversity: Developed in partnership with the Wildlife Habitat Council, this white paper explores how the automotive industry can implement nature-based solutions to prevent pollution. Published August 2023.
- Pollinator Toolkit: A practical guide to improving and protecting biodiversity through the creation of locally appropriate pollinator habitat. This toolkit is intended for use by SP members, their employees, and community partners. Version 2.0, 2020.
- Water Stewardship Strategy Framework: The guidance document introduces a strategic framework and industry-driven water stewardship ambition that individual companies in the automotive value chain may align with and act on. Published September 2023.
- Water Stewardship Action Matrix: Outlines recommended actions so that suitable data, information and risk assessment processes are in place if and when companies choose to directly mitigate water-related risks and report those actions and outcomes to key external stakeholder. Developed in collaboration with The Water Council. Published September 2022.

- Evaluating the Carbon Intensity of Materials: Introduces the concept of carbon intensity and outlines a straightforward and consistent approach for evaluating carbon intensity information for materials used in automotive products. Published May 2022.
- Measuring Renewable Content of Automotive Products: Outlines a common industry-supported definition and straightforward approach for measuring renewable content of automotive products. Published February 2022.
- Measuring Recycled Content of Automotive Products: The purpose of this document is to provide a common industry-supported definition and straightforward approach for measuring recycled content of automotive products consistent with those approaches outlined in other standards. Published December 2021.
Selected Sustainable Packaging Resources
- Automotive NA 48 x 45 Wood Stringer Pallet Specification Guidance: The guidance document provides voluntary industry-developed recommendations intended to help automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their suppliers within the North American region to source uniform 48 x 45 wood stringer pallets, where appropriate, to enable increased reuse and improve efficiency across the supply chain. Published January 2024.
- Sustainable Guidance for Expendable Packaging: Provides straightforward industry-supported guidance to help automakers and their suppliers source sustainable packaging designs for use in automotive service parts operations. Version 2.0., Published November 2023.
- Automotive Sustainable Packaging Guidance for Mfg. Operations: Provides straightforward industry-supported guidance to help automakers and their suppliers source sustainable packaging designs for use in automotive manufacturing operation. Version 3.0. March 2024.
Selected EV Battery Resources
- EV Battery Safe Handling and Storage: This guidance document succinctly summarizes some of the available resources, options and considerations related to handling of EV batteries after their removal from a vehicle, including topics related to 1) battery identification, 2) safety prevention, 3) thermal runaway, and 4), the roles of authorities. Published July 2023.
- Regulations Governing Shipment of EV Batteries: An educational resource highlighting some of the noteworthy regulations and current requirements that stakeholders handling an EV battery at the end of its useful life will need to understand. Published May 2022.
