SP Responsible Battery Work Group begins global landscape assessment project

Earlier this year, Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) formed a new Responsible Battery Work Group to provide a forum for SP members to share and advance best practices for responsible management of advanced vehicle batteries.

Most recently, SP’s Responsible Battery Work Group worked together with the Responsible Battery Coalition (RBC) – a coalition of companies, academics and organizations committed to the responsible management of the batteries of today and tomorrow – to conduct a survey of their respective member companies to establish a baseline assessment of the current landscape of end-of- life (EOL) management for all types of lithium-ion batteries used in vehicles within North America. SP and RBC member companies which participated in this survey included vehicle manufacturers, battery and component suppliers, aftermarket retailers, recyclers, logistics and service providers.

As a follow-on to this work, SP is now kicking off a new phase of work to develop a Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Global Landscape Assessment.  SP will work together with its partners at the RBC to develop a landscape assessment of key global industry association and public-private partnership initiatives focused on responsible management of all types of lithium-ion batteries used in vehicles. The information collected through these projects will be used to enhance work group members’ awareness of the current landscape, and help SP and RBC to identify opportunities for the North American automotive industry to advance responsible management of such technologies.
