Using the Power of Nature to Prevent Pollution
WHC (Wildlife Habitat Council) and Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) have released a suite of resources focused on the use of nature-based solutions (NbS) to prevent pollution in the automotive industry. These resources were made possible through funding from the EPA Region 4 Source Reduction Assistance (SRA) Grant Program, which supports pollution prevention across the southeastern region of the U.S.
The benchmarking research conducted for this report was supported by a two year grant from the U.S. EPA to identify, develop and advance nature based solutions (NbS) as effective tools to reduce air and water pollution at source and improve community resilience and sustainability.
The report outlines 17 NbS identified as potential pollution prevention opportunities for the auto sector. Details provided for each solution include the estimated costs; the pollutants targeted; the co-benefits to biodiversity, climate change mitigation and communities; the business benefits; and the risks or challenges associated with implementation. This information is followed by a decision tree to guide automotive companies in determining which solutions best fit their site, pollution prevention needs, budget ,operational phase and other factors.
