EPA Wins International Prize in Lean Manufacturing: A report
published in October 2003 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
entitled, Lean
Manufacturing and the Environment: Research on Advanced Manufacturing
Systems and the Environment and Recommendations for Leveraging Better
Environmental Performance was awarded the 2004 Shingo Prize
promoting Excellence in Manufacturing. The Shingo Prize, dubbed the
"Nobel prize for manufacturing" by Business Week, is awarded for research
that promotes new knowledge and understanding of manufacturing consistent
with the philosophy that performance can be improved through advancements
in core manufacturing and business processes. Several members of the
Suppliers Partnership for the Environment are featured for their lean
initiatives and leadership. General Motors is featured prominently
as it is used as one of the case studies for its leadership in lean
manufacturing. Among GM's lean successes, the report cites Saturn's
"kanban" system, GM's revised paint booth cleaning process, an improved
electronic RFQ system, and lean implementation workshops (PICOS) and
the associated improvements. Both GM and DaimlerChrysler are also
working with EPA and state authorities to enact advance legislation
to approve operational and equipment changes that will improve lean
while also reducing waste and pollution. Delphi Corporation and Johnson
Controls, Inc. are also cited as large automotive suppliers that have
simultaneously improved their lean manufacturing to accommodate the
new expectations and schedules of lean automobile manufacturers.
