SP 1st Quarter Membership Meeting
On January 11, the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) held its 1st Quarter Membership Meeting at the GM Renaissance Center in Detroit, Michigan. Over 85 representatives from the automotive supply chain participated in the meeting which was sponsored by FTS Technologies.

SP was very pleased to have several distinguished guest speakers participate in the meeting, including Jay Williams, Executive Director, Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers; Matt Bogoshian, Senior Policy Counsel, Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); and, Mike Lynch, Managing Director, Green Innovation, NASCAR. The meeting also featured discussions of member companies' sustainability activities including: a presentation on General Motors Company's Sustainability Report by Doug Yates, Manager, Facility Sustainability Initiatives; a presentation on Goodyear's Commitment to Sustainability by David Woodyard, Global Manager, Environmental Sustainability and Product Stewardship; and, a presentation on FTS Technologies' Environmentally Friendly Surface Treatment Processes by Russell Brynolf, CEO. In addition, SP's Materials Efficiency, Energy and Water, and Technology and Networking Work Groups provided updates on Work Group activities and objectives for 2012.

SP Materials Efficiency Work Group report included presentations from: Peter Feamster, PFA, on a project involving recycling plastic pallets; Mark Doetsch, BAE Industries, on a project involving re-using scrap steel window cut-outs to produce new parts; and, Pashon Murray and Greg Willerer, Detroit Dirt, on an initiative to collect organic waste from local businesses and turn it into compost for urban farmers within Detroit. SP's Technology and Networking Work Group discussed an initiative focused on technology & service adoption / implementation within the auto supply chain, as well as the development of an SP Environmental Achievement Awards Program. And, Bill Allemon, ARCADIS provided an update on an Energy Management System concept in discussion by SP's Energy Work Group.
Following the meeting, Matt Bogoshian and Mike Lynch toured the exhibits of SP member companies Chrysler, GM and Ford at the 2012 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) accompanied by several SP member representatives. CEC Auto Supply Chain Meetings
On December 7, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) hosted a roundtable discussion of a group of automobile OEMs and suppliers at General Motors Mexico (GMM) Headquarters in Mexico City to discuss ways that the Mexican automotive industry can work with its supply chain by identifying and then addressing key issues and potential pilot projects that will support the environmental and economic interests of the industry. Key issues discussed included water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials and waste management and resource creation.

Key issues discussed included chemical issues management, technology and innovation, waste management and resource creation.
These meetings were hosted as part of the CEC's project on "Improving the economic and environmental performance of the North American Automotive Industry Supply Chain" which supports the organization and expansion of SP-like activities in Mexico and Canada. ARCADIS announced that it won a large contract to provide consultancy and management services to oversee construction of a new water network for Oman's Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW). When complete, the network will bring clean water directly to the taps of hundreds of thousands of residents in the Al Sharqiyah region. This project will eliminate the need to truck water from filling station outposts to residents, reducing PAEW's carbon footprint as well as noise and traffic pollution. The three-year, multi-million dollar contract is scheduled to begin in January 2012. More Information.
Dan Knott, Senior Vice President, Purchasing and Supplier Quality, Chrysler Group LLC, addressed industry executives at the 2012 Automotive News World Congress in Detroit, about the importance of improving relations and collaboration with suppliers. One of the biggest changes Fiat S.p.A. has made since becoming involved with Chrysler is seen daily by the majority of its employees -- especially those on the manufacturing floor. DENSO Corporation has jointly developed a home energy management system (HEMS) with TOYOTA Housing Corporation and Misawa Homes Co., Ltd. The HEMS, DENSO's first such product of its kind, has functions that work with plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles. It will be available in the Japanese market in or after February 2012. Federal-Mogul Corporation offers a unique portfolio of innovative automotive interior lighting products that provide automotive designers with improved integration, energy efficiency, ease of packaging and distinctive styling options. LEDs consume approximately 85 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and are essential to the low energy consumption of ambient lighting. LEDs also last nearly ten times longer than incandescent bulbs and generate much less heat, allowing for smaller, thinner packaging and improved installation and styling options. More Information.
Federal-Mogul Corporation is supplying products for all 10 of Ward's 10 Best Engines for 2012 model year vehicles. Federal-Mogul has designed and manufactured leading technologies for most of the engines recognized as Ward's "10 Best" during the last 18 years. This is the second year in a row that Federal-Mogul technologies have been featured on all 10 engines. More Information.

Ford enters 2012 with plans to further reduce the amount of water used to make vehicles and continue showing efficiency is not only inherent in its vehicle lineup, but also in its manufacturing practices. A new goal calls for Ford to cut the amount of water used to make each vehicle 30 percent globally by 2015, compared with the amount of water used per vehicle in 2009. Ford is also developing year-over-year efficiency targets as part of its annual environmental business planning process and has established a cross-functional team spanning several divisions to review water usage more holistically. Christopher Melnick, a 2011 graduate of Ferndale High School, is the recipient of Gage Products Company's 16th annual community scholarship award. The $1,000 Gage scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding Ferndale High School graduate who intends to pursue a degree in engineering. The company established its scholarship program in 1996. General Motors has released its first global sustainability report as a new company, reinforcing its belief that sustainability goals are best achieved when integrated into its business model. The report details sustainability progress in four sections - design, build, sell, reinvest - as well as announces GM's commitment to a new set of environmental stewardship goals during the next decade. General Motors has cut energy intensity at 30 North American plants by an average of 25 percent - equivalent to the emissions from powering 97,000 U.S. homes - to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star© Challenge for Industry. Collectively, the manufacturing facilities avoided more than 778,380 metric tons of greenhouse gas. It would require the planting of 20 million trees that grow for 10 years to mitigate the same amount. And the efforts saved GM $50 million in energy costs. More Information.
Johnson Controls and the U.S. Army announced a federal contract for a solar energy installation and other energy efficiency improvements at Fort Bliss. The nearly $16 million project, executed through the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center in Huntsville, Ala., is expected to save the post $39 million in energy costs over the next 24 years. More Information. Johnson Controls has developed an innovative instrument cluster concept that combines multiple layers of information to generate a three-dimensional (3D) interface. The Multilayer Instrument Cluster concept, which is targeted for full- and mid-size luxury vehicles, creates a more realistic view of the external environment for increased driving efficiency and safety. More Information. Oemeta's primary metalworking product, HYCUT® has been certified by the USDA under the BioPreffered program as described in: www.biopreferred.gov. Oemeta is a 90 year old German metalworking manufacturer. More Information. Partnering with a leading automotive manufacturer in the U.S., Quaker Chemical Corporation was charged with reducing metalworking coolant and central system operating costs, and with consolidating the number of metalworking products in the automotive plant. Quaker utilized its Chemical Management Services expertise to inventory the metalworking products currently being used in the plant, and to recommend the best metalworking coolant for the customer's honing operations. When Bahrat Electronics Limited (BEL) was experiencing problems with their metalworking fluid performance, tool life, hazardous waste generation and coolant odor in their CNC machining center, they turned to Quaker Chemical experts for help. New DOC Report Examines the Federal Role in U.S. Innovation and Competitiveness On Jan. 6, 2012, the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) issued a new report highlighting key policy priorities to sustain and promote American innovation and economic competitiveness. The report, The Competitiveness and Innovative Capacity of the United States, examines the historic role of federal investments in research, education and infrastructure in driving the nation's economic competitiveness, business expansion and job creation, and argues for continued strong support for those three areas as well as manufacturing. Department of Energy Releases its 2011 Critical Materials Strategy The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today released the 2011 Critical Materials Strategy. The report examines the role that rare earth metals and other key materials play in clean energy technologies such as wind turbines, electric vehicles, solar cells and energy-efficient lighting. Water Reuse: Potential for Expanding the Nation's Water Supply through Reuse of Municipal Wastewater With recent advances in technology and design, treating municipal wastewater and reusing it for drinking water, irrigation, industry, and other applications could significantly increase the nation's total available water resources, particularly in coastal areas facing water shortages, says a new report from the National Research Council. This report examines a wide range of reuse applications, including potable water, non-potable urban and industrial uses, irrigation, groundwater recharge, and ecological enhancement. |
