Gage Products Hosts Quarterly SP Forum at GM RenCen

   

On January 16, Gage Products Company hosted SP's 1st Quarter Membership Meeting at the General Motors Renaissance Center in Detroit, MI, where nearly 150 automotive suppliers, OEM's and government representatives gathered to work together, learn from each other and share environmental best practices.

During the meeting, Gage Products Company presented SP with an award, citing its environmental stewardship in working with OEM's and suppliers to enhance sustainability and corporate social responsibility, and SP's support in helping Gage Products achieve 25 years of closed loop purge solvent recycling success. SP was pleased to have several guest speakers participate in the meeting, including Jim Jones, Acting Assistant Administrator and Matt Bogoshian, Senior Policy Counsel, who shared new activities of US EPA's Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP) with participants. Sheryl Connelly, Manager, Global Trends and Futuring for Ford Motor Company discussed Ford's recent report Looking Further with Ford, and resulting insights related to sustainability.

During the course of the day, SP members led discussions on various projects being driven from within the SP membership in areas such as chemicals management, energy management, materials efficiency, renewable energy and technology innovation.  In addition, General Motors presented its annual Environmental Excellence Award to SP member company GDC Inc. for its consistent collaboration in supplying recycled-content parts and contributing to community-based stewardship and recycling initiatives.  During the meeting Veronika Scott, Founder, The Empowerment Plan,  discussed her MPWR coats and GDC's role in enabling the donation of GM scrap vehicle material for the coats that transform into sleeping bags for the homeless.  

 

Following the meeting, Jim Jones and Matt Bogoshian of the US EPA toured the exhibits of SP member companies at the North American International Auto Show, including guided tours of Chrysler, Ford, GM and Hyundai's exhibits led by SP member representatives.

Save the Date: Upcoming SP Events

February 19 (Spring Hill, TN): There will be an SP Southern Supply Chain Forum on Improving Materials Efficiency on February 19 hosted by GM Spring Hill ManufacturingThe February 19 Forum will include:
  • An introduction to Suppliers Partnership and environmental sustainability efforts underway across the auto supply chain.
  • Examples of SP members working together to identify sustainable solutions to keep materials in use and improve the bottom line.
  • A discussion of best practices in reducing waste and creating efficiencies in the operations of automotive manufacturers and suppliers based in the Southern US, including Calsonic Kansei and DENSO.
  • A roundtable discussion on challenges and opportunities in improving materials efficiency in the Southern United States.
  • An optional tour, following the meeting, of GM Spring Hill's new LGE engine plant. Learn more about the Spring Hill engine plant here.  
May 8 (Indianapolis, IN): Covanta 4Recovery will host SP's 2nd Quarter Membership Meeting on May 8 in downtown Indianapolis.  In addition to SP Working Group discussions, representatives of SP member company automotive manufacturing operations based in Indiana will provide strategies and on the ground examples in support of reaching environmental sustainability goals.  In addition, the meeting will feature a guided tour of Covanta's Indianapolis facility which processes 2,175 tons per day of solid and liquid waste providing renewable energy to the City of Indianapolis and Marion County.

SP Welcomes New Members

SP is pleased to announce that Dykema Gossett PLLC, RheTech, Inc. and Valicor have joined the organization.  

Dykema is a leading national law firm, serving business entities worldwide on a wide range of complex business issues. With years of experience representing companies in the automotive industry, Dykema has one of the most extensive automotive legal practices in the United States.  Dykema will be represented in SP by Grant Gilezan, Practice Group Leader of Dykema's Environmental Law Group and committee member of the firm's Automotive Industry Group.

RheTech, Inc. is a producer of filled and reinforced polypropylenes, engineered resins, color concentrates and additives.  RheTech is dedicated to innovation and delivering performance, value, and quality its our service to every customer. RheTech will be represented in SP by James Preston, Vice President of Business Development.

The new Valicor® brings together two names in fluid purification and resource management technologies and services - Solution Recovery Services and United Waste Water.  As such, Valicor is an industrial and fluid services organization uniquely positioned to focus on its core mission of delivering sustainability solutions to its customers.  Valicor will be represented in SP by Steve Mailhot, General Manager Oil Division.

ARCADIS has announced the expansion of its guaranteed remediation program, known as GRiP®, to include complex environmental, infrastructure and water projects. The expanded program called Guaranteed Outcomes, will save its clients time and money, manage risks, and move projects to closure more efficiently while protecting human health and preserving the environment. Braskem is the winner of the FINEP Awards in the Sustainable Innovation category that was created this year. This recognition comes in addition to the award from the Brazilian Innovation Agency in the Large Companies category presented to Braskem in 2011. The award ceremony was held at Palácio do Planalto, the official workplace of Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff, who was also present at the event. More Information.   

 

From Jan. 21-26, more than 100 Chrysler Group employees participated in a wide variety of community service projects including: preparing and serving meals at The Baldwin Center and the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS); installing bathroom floor tiles and cabinets at HAVEN; partnering with Habitat for Humanity to renovate a home in Detroit; and helping Macomb-area Special Olympics athletes enjoy an afternoon of bowling. An independent panel of journalists representing multicultural and mainstream media chose Chrysler Group LLC as "Corporation of the Year" for its leadership in developing women leaders in the automotive industry. In addition, the panel announced its choice of the all-new 2013 Ram 1500 as "Urban Truck of the Year." The awards were announced as part of the 17th Annual Urban Wheel Awards show held on Sunday, January 13, in Detroit, Mich. More Information.    

 

Covanta has released its second sustainability report. The report outlines Covanta's sustainability policies, performance goals and progress in key focus areas. DENSO is investing nearly $1 billion in North America over the next four years, which will result in more than 2,000 jobs across the region. The investment will allow DENSO to better support its North American customers, as well as expand new business areas and localize products, many of which will help automakers meet upcoming fuel requirements. More than $750 million will be invested in the United States alone, along with more than 1,200 jobs. More Information.  

 

Ford Motor Company announced a strategic collaboration that will demonstrate how a typical American family can significantly reduce their electricity bills and CO2 footprint by integrating home appliance technology with a plug-in vehicle to achieve an energy-efficient lifestyle.  Specifically, MyEnergi Lifestyle showcases how combining renewable energy generation with "time-flexible" loads optimizes energy consumption across a plug-in vehicle and home appliances. Ford's recycling and remanufacturing program has kept 120 million pounds of damaged vehicle parts from landfills since 2003, effectively ending the days when the crack of a headlamp or crunch of a bumper would render useless such components. The Core Recovery Program oversees collection, remanufacturing and recycling of damaged parts - everything from small sensors and fuel injectors to large engine parts - from Ford vehicles that have been repaired through the company's dealer network. SP member GDC, Inc., a Tier One component supplier based in Goshen, Ind., is being recognized with the General Motors Environmental Excellence Award for its consistent collaboration in supplying recycled-content parts and contributing to community-based stewardship and recycling initiatives. GDC was instrumental in helping insulate sleeping bags for the homeless and turning oil-soaked booms into parts for the Chevrolet Volt. More Information.   

 

Across its global operations, GM manages nearly 2,500 acres of wildlife habitat, working with local schools, non-governmental organizations, nonprofits and environmental preservation groups to enhance these areas and increase community awareness about preservation.  Leading this charge is Sue Kelsey, GM's biodiversity program manager. Her job is to promote and reduce the company's environmental impact, and she is the next guest on the GMBeyondNow podcast series. More Information.  

 

Haley & Aldrich has been named in Trenchless Technology's "Top 50 Trenchless Design Firms," jumping eight spots since 2011 as a result of the firm's 40% revenue growth in trenchless technology projects. The engineering and environmental consulting firm attributes its ranking to the firm's strategic focus on innovative application of cutting-edge technologies, as well as its commitment to design to help clients manage risk. Honda Transmission Mfg. of America, Inc. has announced an agreement with Juhl Wind, Inc. of Pipestone, Minn., to develop, install, and operate two utility scale wind turbines to generate electricity for the plant's operations. Once the turbines begin operating later this year, Honda indicates the transmission plant in Russells Point, Ohio will be the first major automotive manufacturing facility in the United States to obtain a substantial amount of its electricity directly from wind turbines located on its property, while also reducing CO2 emissions from this renewable energy source. Honda automobile assembly plants in Ohio have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) ENERGY STAR certification for the sixth year, while its assembly plant in Indiana earned the designation for the first time, boosted by energy efficiency gains from the start of a second shift of auto production. For the eighth consecutive year Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Team Members held a toy collection and fund raising drive during the month of December to support the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign. Team Members purchased 442 bicycles and filled several boxes with toys. Team Members from every area of the plant shopped at local department stores to find bicycles and toys for all ages. Team Members also donated $1,000 to the Toys for Tots Foundation to purchase other toys. More Information.  

 

International Products Corporation's Micro-90® is used to clean industrial filter membranes. One of IPC's customers treats industrial wastewater generated by the engine plant of a major automotive manufacturer. For the past 9 years, the company has used Micro-90® Concentrated Cleaning Solution. A 1% solution of Micro-90® not only removes the organics and metals that blind the membranes, it provides savings through reduced energy, reduced chemical use and less downtime. Johnson Controls debuted its lightweight and renewable Compression Hybrid Molding (CHyM) process technology in a door panel substrate component at the 2013 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The CHyM process technology integrates the advantages of both natural fiber and thermoplastics, allowing these technologies to be positioned exactly where they are needed for maximum product performance. Johnson Controls introduced its 48 volt Micro Hybrid battery demonstration module as part of its full spectrum of advanced energy storage solutions for automobiles. Leveraging a dual voltage architecture, Johnson Controls' Micro Hybrid battery system would involve a low voltage lead-acid battery and a 48 volt Lithium-ion battery that enable optimization of energy generation and consumption, thus saving fuel. Nissan is now working with The Nature Conservancy to stop the spread of non-native forest pests that are causing harm to trees across the United States. The company recently donated $50,000 to help keep Tennessee, a state where Nissan employs thousands of people, green. More Information.

TestAmerica announced  that over the coming three months it will reduce the sample size for a number of analytical methods under its Lower Volume InitiativeSM (LVI) Program across their network of over 90 locations. The LVI Program offers clients the ability to significantly reduce water samples normally collected using the traditional 1000mL (1 Liter) volume containers. More Information.

  

Waste Management alone produces more renewable energy than the entire United States solar industry - and it does this solely from trash. One process WM uses to accomplish this is called landfill-gas-to-energy. Like wind and solar, landfill gas is a renewable source of energy endorsed by the Environmental Protection Agency as an alternative to fossil fuels. Together with its waste-to-energy plants, WM is using that energy to power approximately 1.2 million homes.  More Information.

On January 18, Steve Hellem, SP Executive Director, participated in a roundtable discussion on "Applying a Sustainability Lens to Environmental Protection" hosted by US EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson and Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe at EPA Headquarters in Washington, DC.  Administrator Jackson announced at the meeting that the EPA has launched a new website on sustainable manufacturing available at http://www.epa.gov/sustainablemanufacturing/

Major climate threat to global supply chains identified by new research from the Carbon Disclosure Project and Accenture
Seventy percent of companies believe that climate change has the potential to affect their revenue significantly, a risk which is intensified by a chasm between the sustainable business practices of multinational corporations and their suppliers, according to research published by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and Accenture.

Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) is an innovative collaboration between automobile original equipment manufacturers and their suppliers and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). SP addresses the goals of the membership by creating new and innovative business-centered approaches to environmental protection that improve the environment while providing value throughout the automobile supply chain.
