SP / TAMA 3rd Quarter Membership Meeting

 

On September 8, the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) and the Tennessee Automotive Manufacturers Association (TAMA) co-hosted their 3rd Quarter Membership Meeting at the Northfield Workforce Development and Conference Center in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Over 140 representatives of the automotive supply chain participated in the meeting including OEMs, suppliers, non-profit and government leaders.

 

The meeting opened with a panel on Greening the Automotive Supply Chain, featuring Kevin Butt, General Manager/Chief Environmental Officer of Environmental/Safety Engineering, Toyota North America (pictured left) and SP's Chair, Randy Leslie, Vice President & General Manager, Johnson Controls Inc. A panel of federal government representatives -- including Tom Murray, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Andre de Fontaine, Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) and Ben Vickery, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Program -- discussed tools and resources available for manufacturers, including the new E3: Economy, Energy, Environment initiative.

SP members John Bradburn, GM, Mark Werthman, Chrysler and Rahul Naik, ARCADIS discussed strengthening OEM and supplier relationships through SP. Mr. Bradburn presented several projects that GM has developed in partnership with SP member companies, including a project to turn oil-soaked booms from the Gulf of Mexico into Chevrolet Volt components. Mr. Werthman discussed the process of achieving zero waste to landfill status at Chrysler Group Headquarters and Technology Center, while Mr. Naik presented a case study on a green and sustainable remediation partnership project between Ford and ARCADIS.

The next panel featured representatives from six major Southern automotive associations to discuss their work with the automotive industry in their state, including the Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association (AAMA), Georgia Automotive Manufacturers Association (GAMA), Mississippi Automotive Manufacturers Association (MAMA), South Carolina Automotive Council (SCAC),  Southern Automotive Women's Forum (SAWF) and Tennessee Automotive Manufacturers Association (TAMA).

The meeting concluded with a Panel on SP's Signature Issues, featuring reports from SP's Chemical Issues, Energy and Water, Materials Efficiency, and Technology & Networking Work Groups.  SP's four Work Groups are focused on:  

  • Chemical Issues: Creating Materials Health & Environmental Assessment Strategy (MAS) to develop a common screening process for OEMs and their suppliers. Addressing global chemical regulations that are impacting product/material engineering and manufacturing.
  • Energy and Water: Sponsoring and supporting ongoing collection and dissemination of information, discussions and action between automobile OEMs, their suppliers, the utility industry and government entities, on energy and water issues affecting the operations of companies in the automobile supply chain. 
  • Materials Efficiency: Developing and deploying environmental technologies and programs in order to reduce environmental impacts, gain financial value, as well as promote environmental sustainability.
  • Technology and Networking: Supporting a forum for Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers to the industry so that their issues and ideas can be addressed by OE and Tier 1 supplier companies.

CEC Auto Supply Chain Workshop

On September 7, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation sponsored a Workshop on Environmental Assistance Programs and Resources for Automotive OEMs and Suppliers at the Northfield Workforce Development and Conference Center in Spring Hill, Tennessee. The CEC hosted this Workshop as part of its project on Improving the Economic and Environmental Performance of the North American Automotive Industry Supply Chain.

The meeting included presentations on environmental programs, tools and resources available to manufacturers in the United States, Mexico and Canada.  Speakers included Benjamin Teitelbaum, CEC, Tom Murray, US EPA, Ben Vickery, NIST MEP, Lynn Lane, Electricfil Corporation, Alejandro Sosa, Navista Mexico, Maria Petrou, Environment Canada and Rahul Naik, ARCADIS. Participants also discussed environmental challenges facing the North American Automotive Industry Supply Chain and opportunities to improve the environmental performance of the supply chain through the development and implementation of green supply-chain programs across North America.

SP's 4th Quarter Membership Meeting will be held on November 8, 2011 in Detroit, MI and will be co-hosted by Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit and EQ - The Environmental Quality Company. The Membership Meeting will include presentations on SP Work Group activities - including Chemical Issues, Energy and Water, Materials Efficiency, and Technology and Networking; presentations from the meeting's hosts Goodwill and EQ; and additional activities to be announced. A full meeting agenda and registration information will be distributed soon.

Effective July 27th, 2011, Asset Recovery & Management Group LTD of Chicago, Illinois has been issued the Trademark-  Zero Waste, Zero Landfill and Lowest Life Cycle Cost.  More Information.

  

Chrysler Group LLC, working in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), will deliver 14 demonstration fleet Ram 1500 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) pickup trucks to officials in both San Francisco and Sacramento. The 28 PHEV Ram 1500 pickups delivered by Abdullah Bazzi, senior manager of the Chrysler Group's advanced hybrid vehicle project, are part of a national demonstration fleet of 140 vehicles that will be used during the next three years to evaluate customer usage, drive cycles, charging, thermal management, fuel economy, emissions and impact on the region's electric grid. Chrysler Group LLC continued to demonstrate its historic commitment to supplier diversity and minority supplier development, holding its twelfth annual Matchmaker event at the Company's headquarters in Auburn Hills. Matchmaker is focused on providing minority-owned, women-owned and veteran-owned businesses access to Chrysler Group's Tier 1 suppliers and the Company's procurement organization. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded DENSO International America (DIAM) $2.6 million toward the development of an efficient method to manage battery temperatures that will help reduce the battery pack size for plug-in and electric vehicles. DIAM's project was among 40 across 15 states in which the DOE granted funding to help improve the fuel efficiency of next generation vehicles. DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, Inc. (DMTN), a DENSO Group Company, has achieved the Commissioner's Award of Excellence for Workplace Safety. The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner presented the award at the 34th Annual Tennessee Safety and Health Congress held at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, on Aug. 3, 2011. EQ - The Environmental Quality Company's (EQ) Site in Belleville received the CET Bronze Award for an outstanding safety and health record from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA). The MIOSHA program is part of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).  More Information.  

 

Federal-Mogul Corporation introduced at this year's Frankfurt Auto Show its Advanced Corona Ignition System (ACIS), a breakthrough technology for fuel efficiency and  emissions reduction that significantly outperforms conventional spark-ignition systems. Federal-Mogul's ACIS is currently undergoing development with several customers and has enabled an up to 10-percent fuel efficiency improvement over standard spark ignition in development testing. Federal-Mogul Corporation has developed a new piston ring coating that supports vehicle manufacturers' efforts to make gasoline engines more fuel-efficient. The company's patented CarboGlideŽ coating delivers a direct improvement in fuel economy and CO2 emissions by reducing ring friction by up to 20 percent as compared to nitride or other commonly used coatings.  More Information   

  

Ford Motor Company, which is working closely with suppliers to offer increasing levels of new technologies in its vehicles, was named a winner of the 2011 Automotive News Suppliers' Choice Award. The award, announced at the Center for Automotive Research's annual conference, recognizes outstanding work in bringing innovations to market. More Information.     

 

Ford and Lear Corporation are taking another leap forward in sustainable technology with the introduction of new head restraint foam that has 25 percent of the polyol replaced with soy. Seventy-five percent of Ford's North American vehicles feature bio-foam in the head restraints, including the Ford F-150, Taurus, Explorer and Fusion.  More Information. 

  

General Motors remains the No. 1 innovator among 184 companies ranked by The Patent Board in its quarterly automotive and transportation industry scorecard. It is the third consecutive quarter that GM occupies the top spot. Earlier this year, the Clean Energy Patent Growth Index of U.S. patents ranked GM No. 1 in clean-energy patents across all industries for 2010. General Motors is introducing a flame treatment technology that lets paint stick to plastic vehicle parts like instrument and door panels without using primers that contain solvents and can foul the air. GM learned about this technology through SP. Whitmore Lake, Mich.-based supplier FTS Technologies was striving to get its flame treatment technology implemented and approached John Bradburn, GM's manager of waste-reduction efforts.  More Information.  

 

Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit and the Next Detroit Neighborhood Initiative (NDNI) have formed a partnership to clear litter from the streets, sweep sidewalks and maintain boulevard medians in several Detroit neighborhoods. More Information.  

 

Heritage Transport, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Heritage Environmental Services, LLC was recently issued its SmartWay Certification from the Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA) as a qualified transportation partner. This greatly sought after certification is issued only to those transporters who demonstrate their commitment to reducing fuel consumption, which not only protects the environment but can also improve a company's bottom line.  More Information. 

 

Due to increasing global demand for high-quality automotive batteries for environmentally friendly Start-Stop technology, Johnson Controls is investing $100 million to build a Start-Stop vehicle battery plant in China. The plant will supply global and local automakers in Asia and is expected to start production in early 2013. More Information.

Johnson Controls announced its inclusion on both the World and North America Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) for 2011. This is the seventh consecutive year Johnson Controls has been named to both DJSI indexes. Johnson Controls is the only North American company under the Automobiles and Parts category named to the prestigious World Index, and only one of two companies in that category named to the North America Index. EPA launches electronic GHG reporting tool
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is launching a new tool to allow 28 industrial sectors to submit their 2010 greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution data electronically. Prior to being finalized, more than 1,000 stakeholders, including industry associations, states and NGOs tested the electronic GHG Reporting Tool (e-GGRT) to ensure clarity and user-friendliness.

Webcast for Industry: Unveiling of the Implementation Guide

This webcast will provide a high-level overview of a new resource from the Industrial Technologies Program, Guiding Principles for Successfully Implementing Industrial Energy Assessment Recommendations. This guidebook provides industry with guidance on how to successfully implement the recommendations identified during energy assessments. The webcast will address critical aspects of preparation and implementation before, during, and after an assessment and will focus on key strategies for ensuring not only implementation of recommendations but continuous energy efficiency improvement.
