SP 4th Quarter Membership Meeting

 

On November 8, the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) held its 4th Quarter Membership Meeting in Detroit, Michigan which was co-hosted by Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit and EQ - the Environmental Quality Company. Over 60 representatives from the automotive supply chain participated in the meeting.  Special thanks to Kathy Laird and Consandra Allen of Goodwill, and Kelly McInnis, Jeff Roberts, Bob Doyle and Amy Jo Haratyk of EQ for their assistance in coordinating and hosting the meeting.

The morning session of the meeting featured: a presentation by Greg Rose, Chrysler's Director of Corporate Sustainability & Environmental Affairs, on Chrysler Group's Corporate Sustainability Report; an update on activities at USCAR by Stephen Zimmer, Executive Director; and, a presentation on American Small Manufacturers Coalition's (ASMC) 2011 Next Generation Manufacturing Study by Mike Coast, President, Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center (MMTC).

During the meeting, participants toured the automotive work center of Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit -- a supplier to GM, Ford and Chrysler -- where they had the opportunity to view the work of Goodwill's client / trainee teams.

Ben Vickery, NIST / EPA, opened the afternoon session of the meeting with a discussion of an EPA Market Opportunities Symposium being organized in 2012 that may present opportunities for SP and its members.  The meeting continued with reports on each of SP's Work Groups, including discussion of a 2012 Energy Management Systems Project proposed by SP's Energy and Water Work Group and a Proposal for Phase 4 of SP's Materials Assessment Strategy (MAS) Project which would focus on End of Life Vehicle Materials. In addition, on the afternoon of November 7 SP members and guests participated in a tour of EQ's Belleville, MI facility including:

  • EQ's Michigan Disposal Waste Treatment Plant: the largest stabilization and treatment facility in North America (by volume) with the ability to process hazardous and non-hazardous materials through stabilization, chemical oxidation/reduction, deactivation, micro encapsulation and other permitted technologies.
  • EQ's Wayne Disposal, Inc. Site #2 Landfill: the only commercial hazardous waste landfill in Michigan and the only landfill in EPA Region V permitted to accept PCB contaminated wastes.
CEC Auto Supply Chain Meetings

On December 7, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) will host a strategic discussion in Mexico City of a group of automotive OEMs and suppliers to discuss ways that the Mexican automotive industry can work with its supply chain by identifying and then addressing key issues and potential pilot projects that will support the environmental and economic interests of the industry. The meeting will be held at the offices of General Motors México in Mexico City and additional information on participation is available at http://cec-auto-mx-dec2011.eventbrite.com/

On December 13, the CEC will host a Strategic Discussion of Automobile OEMs and Suppliers to discuss opportunities to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of the automobile supply chain in Canada. It is anticipated that a focus of this meeting will be on opportunities relating to Chemicals Issues Management in Canada. The meeting will be held at the offices of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association (APMA) in Toronto, Ontario and additional information on participation is available at http://cec-auto-dec13-2011.eventbrite.com/  

These meetings are being hosted as part of the CEC's project on "Improving the economic and environmental performance of the North American Automotive Industry Supply Chain" which supports the organization and expansion of SP-like activities in Mexico and Canada. Save the Date: SP's 1st Quarter Meeting

 

SP's 1st Quarter Membership Meeting will be held on January 11, 2012 at the GM Learning Center located at 300 Renaissance Center, Detroit, MI in conjunction with the 2012 North American International Auto Show. A draft meeting agenda and registration information will be distributed to SP members soon via e-mail.

Albemarle Corporation was named "Biodiesel Corporation of the Year" by the World Refining Association during the Biofuels 2011 Annual Meeting in Amsterdam on October 12. This award, which was presented to representatives from Albemarle's Alternative Fuel Technologies (AFT) division, recognizes industry leaders that have made substantial contributions in the field of renewable fuels. The Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) honored Albemarle Corporation and LINE-X Protective Coatings with the 2011 Innovation Award for the development of a new color stable aliphatic coating technology.  The coating utilizes Albemarle's ETHACURE® 90, a new aliphatic curative that considerably improves the processing capability of polyurea spray elastomer coating systems. Chrysler Group LLC announced the release of its 2010 Sustainability Report. The report represents the first time the Company has presented its vision for creating a sustainable enterprise, including strategies, initiatives and commitments. The Chrysler Group 2010 Sustainability Report was developed in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Framework. Chrysler Group received confirmation from the GRI of achievement at Application Level A. EQ - The Environmental Quality Company announced that it has opened an environmental services center in Las Vegas, Nevada. With the addition of the Las Vegas facility, EQ now operates twenty-seven recycling, treatment, disposal and service facilities throughout the United States, and manages an extensive line of remediation, industrial cleaning, emergency response and total waste management services nationwide. Federal-Mogul Corporation announced the development of a new brake friction manufacturing facility in Chennai, India.  The company, through one of its Indian subsidiaries, broke ground earlier this year on a 10-acre site for construction of the new 38,000-square-meter facility to manufacture the company's broad portfolio of leading-edge technology, environmentally-friendly brake friction materials for the OE and aftermarket segments for automotive, construction, railway and industrial customers.  Production is scheduled to begin before the end of 2011.  More Information.  

 

Ford wants to innovate the way vehicle windshields are installed through a new patented process that makes the attachment less costly, simpler and more eco-conscious than current practices. One patent covers cleaning and activating the edge of the windshield glass in less than 10 seconds. A second Ford patent covers the application of a plasma-reacted nano-coating that modifies the surface for bonding of the adhesive that holds the windshield in place. The entire patented process takes less than one minute. There are several benefits of the new patented technology including elimination of the primers that contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Ford is using 25 20-ounce plastic bottles to make the carpeting in every all-new Ford Escape utility vehicle it builds. It's the first time Ford has used this type of carpeting in an SUV. Based on 180,000 YTD sales, more than 4 million plastic bottles could be diverted from landfills by putting them in the all-new Ford Escape. More Information.  In addition, the all-new Ford Focus Electric, features seat fabric made of recycled material that includes the equivalent of more than 20 plastic bottles per car. Six General Motors facilities globally are joining 15 others in earning the Wildlife Habitat Council certification for creating or enhancing wildlife habitats on their grounds. With 21 certified programs, GM leads all automotive manufacturers. GM incorporates elements like walking trails, native tree plantings, butterfly gardens, rain gardens to control storm water runoff, restored prairie and wetlands, and bat and duck nesting boxes. It works with the nonprofit WHC to encourage habitat management and environmental education at its sites. More Information.  

 

General Motors has added two plants in Rosario, Argentina to its roster of manufacturing facilities that send no waste to landfills. The assembly and stamping plants in the South American country bring GM's landfill-free plant total to 78. More Information.     

  

On November 16, 2011, the American Council of Engineering Companies of Maine (ACEC of Maine) held their annual Engineering Excellence Awards and Haley & Aldrich won Honor Awards for the Portland JetPort and the Presumpscot River Bridge projects. More Information.

The Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council (MMSDC) has recognized Johnson Controls as 2011 "Corporation of the Year" for its outstanding achievements in developing and working with diverse supplier companies. The company was honored for its excellence and commitment to minority business enterprises and its significant contributions to partnerships with minority businesses in all procurement processes. Johnson Controls announced the Panoptix solution, a new approach to building efficiency that makes it easier and more affordable for owners and operators of any size facility to achieve better building performance. More Information.

The Washington, DC-based American Council of Independent Laboratories (ACIL) announced the 21 laboratories receiving the nationwide 2011 ACIL Seal of Excellence (SOE) Award at the ACIL Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA, including SP members RTI Laboratories (Livonia, MI) and TestAmerica Laboratories (Nashville, TN). TestAmerica Laboratories, Inc. announced the opening of a new location, TestAmerica Indianapolis,  which will facilitate organizing on-time sample delivery and local access to TestAmerica's regional laboratories in Valparaiso, IN, Chicago, IL, Dayton, OH, as well as its nationwide network of laboratories for specialty analyses including air, dioxins, sediments and a vast array of analytical capabilities. More Information.   In addition, TestAmerica Laboratories, Inc. announced the opening of the TestAmerica Oakland location, extending logistical coverage to Oakland and the Greater Bay Area. On November 16, Kellen Mahoney, SP, attended a meeting of INEAP: The Interagency Network of Enterprise Assistance Providers. Jay Williams, Executive Director, Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers provided a Report on the Current and Future Activities of his Office during the meeting, including its work with automotive suppliers.

 

On November 17, Steve Hellem, SP, participated in a Strategic Discussion that included representatives of GM, Ford and Chrysler in Mexico City to discuss key issues and opportunities for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC)'s North American Automotive Industry Supply Chain Project in Mexico. The meeting was sponsored by the CEC and hosted by Ford Motor Company Mexico.

 

Market Report: The U.S. Auto Industry is Jumpstarting the Manufacturing Sector

With more competitive labor agreements, automakers are building more in the United States, retooling and refurbishing existing plants, and backshoring operations.          

 

Database Will Benchmark Thousands of Reports, GRI Says
Companies will be able to benchmark their sustainability data against information from thousands of other firms, using a database launched by the Global Reporting Initiative.

 

Applications open for best in class sustainability program for business leaders
The new round of applications for the Spring Session 2012 of the international One Planet Leaders program is now open. The session will run from 26-30 March 2012 in Lausanne, Switzerland. One Planet Leaders (OPL) is an innovative training program for driving sustainability into the core of business. It is jointly offered by business school IMD, and WWF.     

 

CDP Water Disclosure Report 2011 

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Water Disclosure global report finds that 57% of the 190 publicly listed organizations that participated in the survey report board-level oversight of water policies, strategies, or plans. 

  

Government Issues Building Energy and Water Submetering Report
A new interagency report recommends systematic consideration of new metering technologies that can yield up-to-date, finely grained snapshots of energy and water usage in commercial and residential buildings to guide efficiency improvements and capture the advantages of a modernized electric power grid.      

 

NCMS Announces New Online Environmental Resource For Transportation Industry  

The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences has launched the Transportation Environmental Resource Center, a new online compliance resource that provides information on environmental regulations for all transportation sectors including road, rail, air, and water.
