SP 2nd Quarter Membership Meeting
On June 7, SP held its 2nd Quarter Membership Meeting in conjunction with the National Environmental Sustainability Summit (NESS) in Detroit, MI. Over 100 participants attended the meeting, which was hosted by SP member MPS Group. Special thanks to Heather Cataldo and Steve Ciaverilla, MPS Group, for their assistance in coordinating and hosting the meeting.
Benjamin Teitelbaum, Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), opened the meeting with a presentation on CEC's new report Destination Sustainability: Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Freight Transportation in North America. Following Mr. Teitlebaum's presentation, SP's Vice-Chair, Russell Brynolf, FTS Technologies, and SP's Executive Director, Steve Hellem discussed SP's 2011 Strategic Plan and the key activities the organization plans to focus on in the coming year. Pictured: Benjamin Teitelbaum, CEC (left); Participants at SP's 2nd Quarter Meeting (right) During the meeting, Lee Hachigian, Director, Worldwide Facilities Group Energy and Environment for GM, presented GM's 6th Annual Environmental Excellence Award to Mobile Fluid Recovery for providing unique recycling ideas and collaborating on projects like turning oil-soaked booms from the Gulf of Mexico into Chevrolet Volt components. "The relationships forged in the Suppliers Partnership group were a driving factor in creating a sustainable way to help in Gulf clean-up efforts," said Trevis Lyon, Vice President, Mobile Fluid Recovery.

In addition, SP's Vice-Chair, Russell Brynolf, FTS Technologies presented the 2011 SP Leadership Award to Heather Cataldo, MPS Group, for her leadership, dedication and commitment to SP.

National Environmental Sustainability Summit - Auto Day Events
On June 7, SP partnered with the National Environmental Sustainability Summit (NESS) to organize a half-day session targeted towards the Auto Industry with several events beginning directly following SP's 2nd Quarter Membership Meeting.
One of these events was Sustainable Communities: Detroit Driving It Home! in which speakers discussed how Detroit is becoming a sustainable community and creating a model for other urban cities across the country to follow. SP member Heather Cataldo, MPS Group, moderated a panel of dynamic speakers including: Susan Mosey, University Cultural Center Association (UCCA) - Midtown Project; Jean Redfield, NextEnergy; and, Jacob Corvidae, WARM Training Center.
In addition, NESS hosted a panel of government and auto industry representatives from the US, Canada and Mexico to discuss the opportunities to "Improve the Economic and Environmental Performance of the North American Automotive Industry Supply Chain". This meeting served as the kick-off of a special Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) project to re-engage key automotive companies for the development and implementation of green supply-chain programs across North America. On the evening of June 7, SP partnered with the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable to organize a Plenary Panel on "Advancing Environmental Stewardship within the Automotive Industry". Mr. Robert A. Ficano, County Executive of Wayne County, Michigan, officially welcomed Summit attendees to the reception. The Plenary Panel included (listed as pictured, left to right):

Save the Date: SP 3rd Quarter Meeting
SP and the Tennessee Automotive Manufacturers Association (TAMA) will co-host SP's 3rd Quarter Membership Meeting on September 8 in Spring Hill, TN. The meeting will be held at the Northfield Career & Technology Center, Spring Hill, TN from 9:00am - 4:00pm CDT.

Albemarle Corporation announced that it has expanded its presence in the biofuels market with the acquisition of Catilin Inc. Based in Ames, Iowa, Catilin is a technology leader in the development and application of heterogeneous biodiesel catalysis. Catilin's technology and products will further strengthen Albemarle's offerings for the renewable fuels market. Albemarle will also benefit from a number of R&D and distribution synergies resulting from the acquisition. More Information.
Ocean Alliance, the University of Southern Maine and Albemarle Corporation launched a 14-week scientific voyage to study the impacts of recent oil spills and natural disasters on the Gulf of Mexico, one of the world's most important ocean habitats. The scientific mission will leave Key West, Florida with a ten-person team aboard the 93-foot floating laboratory, Odyssey. The team will collect samples from fish, squid, krill, sperm and Brydes whales, and the water from depths of up to 3,000 feet to try to monitor and gauge the health of the Gulf ecosystem. ARCADIS announced that it has been selected by the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) for two contracts totaling $60M in value, further establishing the company as a trusted advisor in the D.C. water sector. ARCADIS will assist with the management and the implementation of DC Water's $1.6 billion sewer system capital improvement program. In addition, ARCADIS will manage under a four-year construction management contract, the implementation of the $400 million biosolids program at the 370 mgd Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant. Fiat SpA recently collected four awards in the "International Engine of the Year 2011" competition for it's TwinAir engine platform, developed by Fiat Powertrain. The jury, which consisted of 76 journalists and industry experts from 36 countries, honored the the TwinAir engine with the top award in the compettion: International Engine of the Year 2011. Ford is offering the public a comprehensive look at the company's progress on environmental and social issues with the release of its 12th annual Sustainability Report.The 2010/2011 report, titled "Blueprint for Sustainability: Driving Change," provides updates on the company's progress in key areas of operations, product enhancements on vehicle safety and societal concerns including water usage and supply chain management. It turns out there's a milky-white substance that seeps from dandelion roots that can be utilized as a natural alternative to synthetic rubber in products. Ford and The Ohio State University are researching the potential of the dandelions' said milky substance as a plastics modifier to help improve the impact strength of plastics, with the material possibly then capable of being used in places such as cupholders, floor mats and interior trim. The Patent Board has ranked General Motors as the No. 1 innovator of 182 companies in its quarterly automotive and transportation industry scorecard. The organization analyzes intellectual property performance across 17 industries and determines the leader in each sector based on measurements that include the number of patents, impact on the industry, and technology and science strength. GM also ranked first in the automotive/transportation sector in the previous scorecard, published in January. More Information.
At GM's Orion Assembly Plant in Lake Orion, Mich., we take the energy from nearby landfills and funnel it back into the plant, which, in turn, powers some of the processes that go into building the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Verano - two of GM's recent entries into the small car market. Johnson Controls, Inc. and MAC S.A. have launched their joint venture in Colombia to produce and sell lead-acid batteries in the Central and South American regions. The companies announced their plan to join forces in October 2010 in order to better serve customers as market leaders in these fast-developing emerging markets. More Information. Rising energy prices, government incentives and enhanced public image are driving energy efficiency in buildings to new heights as a growing number of building owners race to reduce energy consumption, according to the results of the fifth annual, global Energy Efficiency Indicator survey. The survey of nearly 4,000 building owners and operators around the world was led by Johnson Controls' Institute for Building Efficiency, the International Facility Management Association and the Urban Land Institute. More Information. Lear Corporation announced the official opening of a new electronics facility in Rabat, Morocco. The new facility in Rabat supplies industry-leading electronics such as battery chargers and gateway modules to European automakers including BMW, Renault and Volkswagen. The 14,340 square-meter facility currently houses 130 employees and will employ approximately 230 people by the end of 2011. More Information.

This workshop is open all interested parties.
ISO launches ISO 50001 energy management standard The International Organization for Standardization has released ISO 50001, a standard for energy management systems.ISO 50001 is intended to provide organizations with a recognized framework for integrating energy performance into their management practices. Multinational organizations will have access to a single, harmonized standard for implementation across the organization with a logical and consistent methodology for identifying and implementing improvements.
Searchable databases on chemical toxicity and exposure data now available The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is making it easier to find data about chemicals. EPA is releasing two databases - the Toxicity Forecaster database (ToxCastDB) and a database of chemical exposure studies (ExpoCastDB) - that scientists and the public can use to access chemical toxicity and exposure data.
Managing electronic waste in North America On Tuesday, June 21, officials from Canada, Mexico and the United States, as well as experts such as Sarah Westervelt, e-Stewardship Policy Director of the Basel Action Network, will meet in a public forum on e-waste issues and management in North America. The meeting will be webcast on the CEC website, with simultaneous translation in English, French and Spanish. Study finds resource constraints should not be a limiting factor for large-scale EV battery production On the order of 1 billion 40 kWh Li-based EV batteries could be built with the currently estimated reserve base of lithium, according to a recent study by researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National laboratory and the University of California, Berkeley. Lifetime system cost, and other factors, will likely limit scale up more than resource constraints, they found. |
