SP 3rd Quarter Membership Meeting

 

On July 18, the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) held its 3rd Quarter Membership Meeting at Johnson Controls headquarters campus at Glendale, Wisconsin.  Special thanks to Randy Leslie and Jennifer McLean, Johnson Controls, for their efforts in organizing and hosting the meeting.

JCI's Glendale campus has the largest concentration of buildings on one campus to ever receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification. Through small group tours, SP meeting participants had the opportunity to participate in a living case study tour of the campus viewing a broad range of technologies and solutions that have been implemented to promote corporate energy conservation and save water and other natural resources, while minimizing the carbon footprint, and maximizing sustainability on the campus.

Todd Metcalf, Deputy Director, Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers and Tom Murray, Chief, Prevention Analysis Branch, US EPA discussed recent federal government program activities impacting the auto supply chain. The meeting featured reports of ongoing project activities, environmental sustainability best practices and success stories from OEM and supplier members of SP's Materials Efficiency, Energy & Water, Chemical Issues Management and Technology & Networking Work Groups, as well as a presentation from new member ERA Environmental Management Solutions.

CEC Auto Supply Chain Project Webinar

On July 23, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) hosted a webinar on "US EPA Voluntary Program Activities for Manufacturers" as part of its North American Automotive Industry Supply Chain Project.  Public-private partnership programs such as the Green Suppliers Network, E3 and Design for the Environment were discussed.  Presentations from the webinar are now available for download on the SP website.

In addition on July 20, Steve Hellem and Kellen Mahoney of SP and Tom Murray of the US EPA met with representatives of the Embassy of Canada in Washington, DC to brief them on SP and the opportunity to expand SP program activities in Canada through the CEC auto supply chain project.  The next meeting of the SP Canada project activity is now being organized for the 3rd Quarter in the Greater Toronto area.  In addition, the SP program in Mexico organized with the support of the CEC - Alianza Verde Automotriz - will hold its next meeting on September 5 in Mexico City. 

The CEC project team is now organizing follow up webinars on additional North American public-private partnership program activities.  Please contact Kellen Mahoney for more information on the CEC North American auto industry supply chain project, and ongoing project activities in both Mexico and Canada.

SP's 4th Quarter Membership Meeting will be held on October 10, 2012 in Maryville, Tennessee.  The meeting will be hosted by DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee. Additional information on the meeting and registration will be distributed to SP members via e-mail.

Chrysler Group LLC's new World Class Manufacturing (WCM) Academy has only been open for about six months and already it has generated over $1 million in savings, according to Mauro Pino, the Company's Head of World Class Manufacturing, speaking at a manufacturing conference in Plymouth, Mich., on June 21, 2012. More Information.    

 

Chrysler Group LLC and United Way for Southeastern Michigan (UWSEM) are teaming up to fight against the epidemic of childhood hunger that has plagued the region in recent years. Chrysler Group is calling its more than 57,000 employees to tap their energy and the company's spirit of volunteerism to help the hungry and to spread understanding and utilization of UWSEM's programs. DENSO Corporation has developed a vehicle-to-home (V2H) power supply system for electric vehicles (EV), which is designed to work in coordination with DENSO's home energy management system (HEMS). More Information.  

   

DENSO has developed a smaller and more efficient condenser, which helps increase fuel efficiency, while allowing carmakers to have greater design flexibility inside the engine compartment. Compared to conventional models, DENSO's new Global Inner-fin Condenser (GIC) is 30 percent smaller. More Information.    

 

ERA Environmental Management Solutions has won the Accolades 2012 Award in the field of Sustainable Development by the Montreal West Island Chamber of Commerce. The Accolades Awards recognizes businesses and non-profits that have achieved excellence in a number of fields, including manufacturing, innovation, technology, and sustainable development. EQ - The Environmental Quality Company announced that the company has acquired Vac-All Service, Inc. The Taylor, Mich. based company is a leading provider of industrial cleaning, emergency response and environmental remediation services. More Information 

 

Federal-Mogul Corporation has developed a lightweight, high-strength aluminium piston that enables engine manufacturers to increase the power density and efficiency of boosted, direct injected gasoline engines. The Advanced Elastoval II(TM) piston enters series production later this year in a new European passenger car, where it contributes to significant gains in fuel economy and reductions in CO2 emissions. Federal-Mogul Corporation has developed a range of zero-copper and low-copper brake pad formulations using a new tribological fingerprinting process. As companies work to introduce alternative materials ahead of legal deadlines, Federal-Mogul's Eco-FrictionTM is already achieving excellent results in customer trials. More Information.  

 

Ford announced in its annual Sustainability Report that it has reduced the amount of energy required to produce each vehicle in its manufacturing facilities by 22 percent in the last six years. The company also announced plans to reduce usage another 25 percent on a per-vehicle basis by 2016.  More Information.   

 

Ford and Feeding America® will enable participants in all regions of the United States to host events where guests will be able to drive, walk around, or ride in the all-new Escape. In turn, Ford will provide 40 meals per guest to people at risk of hunger. Ford and Feeding America will help provide more than 1.2 million meals total. More Information

 

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development announced participants in a July trade mission to Mexico City, including SP member Gayle Technologies Inc. More Information.   

 

GM recently added its 100th landfill-free facility - a parts distribution center in Lansing, Mich. It is a milestone in the company's ongoing waste-reduction efforts. No other automaker has as many facilities contributing zero waste to landfill. More Information

 

General Motors' Baltimore Operations facility - home of the two-mode hybrid drivetrain, and soon-to-be home of electric motors - earned the 2012 Maryland Green Registry Leadership Award. This award signifies its strong commitment to sustainable practices, measurable results and continual improvement.  GM Baltimore Operations is the only award winner to win more than once.  More Information.    

 

Goodwill Industries International has been recognized with a 2012 Business Outstanding Achievement in Recycling Award from the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Solid Waste Services, Waste Reduction and Recycling Section. The award, which acknowledges a local business for recycling excellence, was presented by Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and other officials at a recent ceremony. More Information.

 

Goodwill Industries International has been awarded the 2012 Sustainability Leadership Award from the International Electronics Recycling Conference & Expo (IERCE). The award recognizes the organization's efforts to divert more than 150 million pounds of electronic equipment from landfills in 2011. Goodwill® is the first nonprofit to be honored with the distinction. More Information.

The RACER Trust has teamed with Green Works, Inc., a non-profit subsidiary of Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit, in a partnership that both adds value to surplus RACER assets and creates job opportunities for men and women facing employment challenges. More Information.

 

Goodyear researchers at the company's Innovation Center here have found in their tests that using soybean oil in tires can potentially increase tread life by 10 percent and reduce the tiremaker's use of petroleum-based oil by up to seven million gallons each year. In addition, testing at Goodyear's tire plant in Lawton, Oklahoma showed improved mixing capabilities in the manufacturing process. More Information.  

 

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company received a 2012 Manny Award in the "Green Initiative" category from Inside Business, a bimonthly business publication in Northeast Ohio. The award is in recognition of Goodyear's Zero Waste to Landfill Program.  More Information.   

 

Haley & Aldrich has been named a Top 20 Contractor in Hazardous Waste and ranked 127 in ENR's 2012 Top 500 Design Firms. More Information

 

Heritage Interactive announced the launch of a new product designed to meet the growing need for international waste data management and reporting. The tool is called International Sustainability Solutions (IS2) Data Management. More Information.   

     

American Honda Finance Corporation (AHFC) announced that its new Central Atlantic regional office in Charlotte, North Carolina, has earned LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.  The facility is AHFC's second LEED-certified facility and one of 12 LEED-certified "green buildings" built and operated by Honda in North America. American Honda Motor Co., Inc., founding sponsor of the nonprofit Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California, is providing Honda solar cell technology to help power the Aquarium's new June Keyes Penguin Habitat. The 11-kilowatt system provides a reliable supply of clean energy that is expected to reduce the Aquarium's reliance on grid-supplied electricity by more than 14,000 kilowatt hours per year. Recognizing Hyundai for its industry-leading Direct Injection (DI) technology, the New England Motor Press Association (NEMPA), in conjunction with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), honored Hyundai with this year's Yankee Cup Technology Award, presented at their annual awards dinner in Cambridge, Mass. DI technology simultaneously improves fuel efficiency and lowers emissions. More Information.  

 

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced it expects to save more than $264 million and reduce fossil fuel use by 72 percent at its Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) through energy and operational efficiency measures over the 25-year performance period.  Through an energy savings performance contract with Johnson Controls the project is expected to deliver these results through the installation of a new biomass steam plant and seven additional conservation measures. Detroit-area teens are putting their green thumbs to work thanks to Johnson Controls. Eighty high school students are participating in the Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC), a summer jobs program created and sponsored by Johnson Controls in collaboration with the Student Conservation Association and The Greening of Detroit. In its fifth year in Detroit, the CLC promotes environmental conservation and the development of professional leadership and job skills, while students complete fundamental environmental projects in local community parks. One hundred East English Village Preparatory Academy high school students will travel four days each week to neighboring J. E. Clark Preparatory Academy beginning this fall under an innovative paid tutoring program aimed at raising student achievement and supporting successful transitions to high school. The three-year, $1.5 million project, jointly developed by the schools' principals, district academic leadership, Lear Corporation and partners, is being funded by Lear Corporation. The program will annually involve several hundred children on both sides of the tutoring equation. More Information.   

 

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. issued the English version of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report titled "Blue Citizenship Stories 2012: Toward Our Vision of Enriching People's Lives." The report, which outlines Nissan's CSR philosophy and activities, is available on Nissan's corporate website. More Information.   

 

DEKRA Certification, Inc., presented Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA) with ISO 50001 Certification this June, making SIA the first car manufacturing plant in the U.S. to achieve this internationally recognized accreditation. Launched in 2011, ISO 50001 outlines the internationally recognized requirements for energy management systems (EnMS). More Information.
