SP Canada Environmental Sustainability Forum

  

On December 4, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) hosted the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) Canada's Environmental Sustainability Forum in Toronto, Ontario as part of the CEC's project on "Improving the economic and environmental performance of the North American Automotive Industry Supply Chain".  The meeting was designed to provide a unique forum for automakers and their suppliers in Canada to network, learn from each other and share tools and environmental sustainability best practices in key areas such as energy efficiency, waste minimization and water efficiency.

Participants at the meeting discussed environmental sustainability programs and practices currently underway within the North American automotive supply chain.  The day's presenters included automotive suppliers Covanta 4Recovery, Johnson Controls Automotive Canada and Woodbridge Group, and automakers Chrysler Group and General Motors.  In addition, representatives from the Southern Ontario Water Consortium (SOWC) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shared new resources to support manufacturers in improving their environmental and economic sustainability.     

 

"As we launch SP's new North American Work Group and drive continued growth of our SP Canada and Alianza Verde Automotriz (AVA) programs,  we look forward to continued opportunities for automakers, their suppliers and government representatives to work together to improve environmental performance while increasing value throughout the automotive supply chain across North America," said Steve Hellem, SP's Executive Director.

SP January 2013 Membership Meeting

On January 16, 2013, Gage Products Company will host SP's 1st Quarter Membership Meeting at the GM Renaissance Center in Detroit, MI.

  • a discussion of renewable energy opportunities with Rob Threlkeld, Global Manager - Renewable Energy, General Motors
  • a presentation on Looking Forward: Post Green with Sheryl Connelly, Manager, Global Trends and Futuring, Ford Motor Company
  • a presentation on 25 Years of Closed Loop Solvent Recycling with Gage Products Company
  • a presentation on Green Polyethylene from Braskem America, Inc.   
  • an introduction to the Sustainable Purchasing Council (SPC) from Dennis McGavis, Director, EHS Sustainability, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company 
  • General Motors Annual Environmental Excellence Award Presentation

Braskem America, Inc. Joins SP

SP announced the addition of its newest member company, Braskem America, Inc., a leading thermoplastic resins producer in the Americas. Braskem is also a leader in the field of biopolymers, producing materials such as Green Polyethylene (Green PE) from a renewable source - sugarcane ethanol.

"Braskem is excited to join the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment," said Erin Neely, Market Development Manager for Braskem. SP members DENSO, Ford, Goodyear and Honda were named to Thomson Reuters 2012 Top 100 Global Innovators list, recognizing their achievements among the world's most innovative companies according to a series of patent-related metrics. More Information.

ARCADIS has deployed its debris management personnel and state-of-the-art technology, HaulPass, to 14 communities in New York and New Jersey where Sandy, one of the worst storms to hit the U.S., wreaked havoc. Additionally, the firm has hired more than 120 local temporary workers to help oversee the cleanup effort that has collected 41,000 tons and 357,000 cubic yards of debris so far. More Information.

ARCADIS
was the inaugural recipient of the IWA Executive Director Prize for Impact at Scale award during the bi-annual Project Innovation Awards for their work on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' (USACE) Greater New Orleans Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS). The award was presented earlier this fall at the IWA's World Water Congress held in Busan, South Korea. More Information.

Chrysler's Jeep® brand continues its support of the men and women who serve our country with donations of $50,000 to organizations supporting U.S. military veterans and their families. The donations were made in conjunction with the Jeep brand's sponsorship of Newsweek & The Daily Beast's first annual Hero Summit held Nov. 14 and 15 in Washington, D.C. More Information.

The Chrysler Foundation announced a grant of $50,000 to the Michigan Science Center (MSC). The funds will be used to support the opening of the MSC and continuation of its public programming. The Michigan Science Center is also home to the Chrysler Science Stage; a 9,800-square-foot science hall for traveling exhibits; hands-on exhibit galleries focusing on space, life and physical science. DENSO has donated $250,000 over the next five years to help reopen the doors to the Michigan Science Center. DENSO believes today's students will help us create tomorrow's technologies -That's why the company supports hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education programs for students, helping to foster innovative thinking, teamwork, problem solving and creativity. ERA Environmental Management's Sarah Sajedi was a finalist for the 2012 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards in the Sustainability Category. Sarah was the top finalist for the Eastern Canada region, earning the spot for her leadership and expertise in helping manufacturers across North America reduce their emissions, manage their environmental footprint, and improve their corporate sustainability.  In a video interview filmed for the event, Sarah talks about the vision behind ERA Environmental Management. Within hours after Hurricane Sandy came ashore and devastated parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast United States, EQ crews were on the scene helping customers. EQ's Terminal Services division based in New Jersey was able to immediately assist its petroleum and chemical terminal customers on the Eastern Seaboard. This included emergency response, removal and treatment of contaminated products and wastewaters as well as transportation and disposal of hazardous waste. More Information.

More than 600 Ford employees have teamed up with nonprofit hunger relief partners in our communities to feed men, women and children in need. MODEL Teams of Ford volunteers are stocking warehouse shelves at food banks, cooking and serving meals at shelters and packing food boxes for delivery to those who struggle every day to find food for themselves and their families. General Motors released an interim update to its inaugural sustainability report, including updates and analysis, along with regional metrics for environmental commitments, product quality, material issues and disclosure. GM has realized year-over-year gains against all of its 2020 environmental goals, from water conservation and renewable energy to emissions reduction. More Information.

General Motors
now has 54 facilities meeting a voluntary energy reduction challenge set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - more than any company worldwide. GM saves $90 million in energy costs as a result. More Information.

The recent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay verification of three Goodyear truck tire retreads - the G316 AT Fuel Max, the G572 LHD Fuel Max and the G305 ATS Fuel Max - is another example of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's ongoing commitment to fuel efficiency. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's Air Maintenance Technology has been named one of Time magazine's "Best Inventions of the Year 2012." Goodyear's Air Maintenance Technology (AMT) will help ensure the optimum tire pressure is maintained and as a result, could mean substantial savings at the fuel pump.  All of its components, including the miniaturized pump, will be fully contained within the tire. Honda released its eighth annual report on the environmental impact of the company's operations in the North America region and its ongoing efforts to minimize that impact by reducing waste, conserving resources, and improving energy efficiency. The Honda 2012 North American Environmental Report covers the fiscal year that began April 1, 2011, and ended March 31, 2012 (FY12), and is published in digital format only. More Information.

 

American Honda released "Every Drop Counts," the second in a series of short films on the initiatives of Honda associates to fulfill the company's vision for reducing Honda's environmental impact and creating a more sustainable business. The new film highlights a project undertaken by associates at Honda's Marysville, Ohio auto plant to capture and use the energy present in water falling from rooftop cooling towers. Johnson Controls is one of only 36 companies selected as a "Top Employer" in China for 2013 by the Corporate Research Foundation (CRF) Institute. The CRF has named top employers since 1991 as part of its effort to identify companies that are leaders in fostering a successful and productive work environment for employees. The CRF is a joint initiative of academics, business journalists, trade associations, researchers and international publishers that offers assessment and acknowledgement of human resources practices by employers. Johnson Controls was among the first recipients of the new GM Quality Excellence Award for consistent outstanding quality for a range of products it provides to General Motors. The award went to five of the company's plants that are located throughout the world. More Information.   

 

Nissan gave an update on a slew of eco-targets this month, highlighting cuts in CO2 emissions and a plan to add 15 hybrid models by 2016. Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga provided details on the company's environmental commitments under the Nissan Green Program 2016 at a press briefing in Yokohama. More Information.

Nissan's manufacturing facilities in North America are making major changes to reduce the amount of energy they use. They have committed to reduce their overall energy consumption by 25 percent in ten years. So how is the company reducing their carbon footprint? They have deployed an air-leak detection squad of sorts. More Information.

Quaker Chemical Corporation has launched QAdvantage, a new enterprise designed to better serve industrial manufacturing customers in North America who are currently served through distribution channels, and to ensure their easy and complete access to Quaker's robust product portfolio and industry-leading expertise. QAdvantage is supported by a dedicated team of professionals who will work with existing distribution partners and end-users to strengthen Quaker's position in the industrial manufacturing market. TestAmerica announced that it is the first environmental testing company to receive U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) accreditation on a lower volume method. The company received DoD accreditation for SW 846 8081 Pesticide and SW 846 8082 PCB Aroclor using the SW 846 3511 sample preparatory method at its Denver facility. More Information.
