SP 1st Quarter Meeting

 

On January 13, SP held its 1st Quarter Membership Meeting in the GM Renaissance Center in Detroit, MI. Over 100 participants attended the meeting, which was hosted by SP members Asset Recovery & Management Group and GM.

SP was very pleased to have Steve Owens, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), participate in the Membership Meeting. Mr. Owens discussed areas of focus for OCSPP, including pollution prevention activities, chemical safety and improving processes under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).  Assistant Administrator Owens noted the EPA's interest in continuing to support industry partnership programs  such as Design for the Environment, E3: Economy, Energy and Environment and SP, and noted that "one of our flagships is this program here [SP]."  He continued, "This group has been doing tremendous work with Tom [Murray, US EPA]."

The meeting also featured presentations on sustainable practices / products from SP members Ford, GM and Chrysler; a presentation from guest speaker Martin Chilcott, 2degrees; an update on SP's Chemical Issues Work Group; and presentations from SP member companies Asset Recovery & Management Group and Haley & Aldrich Inc. The meeting's sponsor, Dave O'Ryan, Asset Recovery, gave a presentation on the company's progress in the past 24 month economic phase, including updates in its metal processing, resource and partner support areas. New SP member, James Little, Vice President, Haley & Aldrich, Inc. gave an overview presentation on Haley & Aldrich and its environmental and engineering consulting services. Carrie Majeske, Product Sustainability Planning and Strategy, Ford, gave a presentation on Ford's Sustainable Materials Story: Then, Now and Future Opportunities. She discussed sustainable processes, such as geothermal cooling, wind power and fumes to fuel, and sustainable products, such as soy based seating foam, natural fiber reinforced plastics and opportunities for recycled materials in various automotive applications. SP's Materials Efficiency Co-Chair, John Bradburn, GM, gave a presentation on a Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Stewardship project involving several SP member companies. Trevis Lyon and Shane Bennet, Mobile Fluid Recovery, and Chris Miller and Jeff Barber, GDC Inc. joined Mr. Bradburn to discuss the project which created parts for the Chevy Volt from oil booms retrieved from the Gulf. Greg Rose, Director Corporate Sustainability & Stationary Environmental Affairs and Rod Eaton, Interior Engr. Manager , Chrysler Group LLC, gave a presentation on seats from recycled foam, which are used in the 2011 Grand Cherokee and are planned for increased usage in the futue. SP's Chemical Issues Work Group Chair, Pat Beattie, Arcalis Scientific, gave a report on the Chemical Issues Work Group, including the Materials Assessment Strategy (MAS) project that is working to develop a common screening process for assessing and prioritizing potential health and environmental impacts of chemicals in parts. Following the meeting, Assistant Administrator Owens toured the exhibits of SP member companies Johnson Controls, Chrysler, GM and Ford at the 2011 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

GMThe Chevrolet Volt has been named the 2011 North American Car of the Year. More Information. In addition, General Motors Co. and the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory announced they have reached a worldwide licensing agreement to use Argonne's patented composite cathode material to make advanced lithium-ion batteries that last longer between charges and can charge at higher voltages. JCIAutomakers seek interior and battery solutions that improve flexibility, spaciousness and sustainability in their vehicles while offering a compelling user experience for consumers. At the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Johnson Controls unveiled the ie:3 demonstrator vehicle, a fully electric vehicle based on the popular small car segment that addresses these needs. Johnson Controls, Inc. broke ground on a fully-integrated battery recycling facility in Florence, S.C. The Florence Recycling Center, slated for completion during 2012 and to be operated by Johnson Controls' Power Solutions business, represents a capital investment of more than $150 million and will create an estimated 250 new jobs and approximately 1,000 indirect jobs in the area. The facility is the first facility of its kind to receive an air permit in the United States in nearly 20 years. More Information.

Detroit Auto Show 2011 Exhibits New Collections Of Energy-Efficient Cars

2011 seems to be the year of the electric car! From super-sexy electric race cars (from Porsche), to a retina-searing electric yellow sports cars (from Mercedes), to practical electric commuter cars (like the Ford Focus EV and Ford C-MAX Hybrid), nearly every major car manufacturer at the Detroit Auto Show this year unveiled a new electric car or a new hybrid.
