several areas that could be the focus of a green center for the automotive
industry. SP's Executive Director, Steve Hellem attended the workshop on behalf of SP.
On January 20, Steve Hellem, SP, made a presentation to the Interagency Network of
Enterprise Assistance Providers (INEAP), which includes representatives from

SP Project Updates
Chemical Issues Work
Group: This Work Group led by Pat Beattie, Arcalis Scientific, provides a
forum for discussing emerging chemical issues of potential impact to automotive
manufacturers and the supply chain. The Work Group held a conference call
on March 23 to move forward with Phase 3 of its Materials Assessment Strategy
(MAS) Project which is focused on "environmental exposures from friction
materials and wear debris".
Energy Work Group: This
Work Group led by Greg Rose, Chrysler and Rahul Naik, ARCADIS, continues to
focus on addressing ways to help SP member companies reduce their energy use
and their environmental footprint. The Work Group is now planning a workshop on government programs and funding opportunities for energy projects in mid-late May in the Detroit area. Additional details will be distributed to members via email shortly.
Materials Efficiency
Work Group: This Work Group led by John Bradburn, GM and Susanne
Fredericks, Goodwill, continues to work to develop and deploy environmental
technologies and programs in order to reduce environmental impacts, gain
financial value, as well as promote environmental sustainability. During
the January 12 SP Meeting, John Bradburn and Carrie Brown, GM, provided an
update on GM's Oil Management and Purge Recycling Programs. In February, the
Work Group conducted a survey of the SP membership to receive input on SP
member companies recycling programs and potential collaboration opportunities.
Technology and
Networking Work Group: This Work Group is providing a forum for small- and
medium-sized SP member companies to determine the most strategic and effective
way to communicate with OEMs and Tier I suppliers. The Work Group met following the January 13
SP Meeting and it was agreed that the Work Group will pursue the following
objectives in 2010:
Provide
a venue to network and share existing technologies and best practices
between OEM and supplier member companies.
Develop
a process to identify and assess innovative new technologies being
developed by small suppliers.
Establish
relationships with Detroit-area colleges and universities to promote
interest in engineering/sustainability and prepare the next generation of
automotive leaders.
